The project “Labour market inclusion for disadvantaged young adults in Romania” continues for another 3 years, from 1 January 2023 to 31 December 2025. The first phase of the project was implemented from November 2019 to December 2022.

In the first phase of the project, a job mediation structure was set up in two counties, Mures and Covasna, with the aim of attracting more job seekers from vulnerable groups to the formal labour market.

However, transition from education to employment remains very problematic for young adults from disadvantaged groups. Young adults from vulnerable groups are confronted with various obstacles which make it difficult for them to enter the labour market, such as stereotypes and discrimination, lacking support from parents, limits put by coming from families with low household incomes (e.g., transportation), lack of soft skills and networks for effective job applications and lack of support after employment.

As an overall objective, the project works thus towards a situation where socially disadvantaged young adults, including those from Roma communities, have better access to decent work.

To achieve this, the project addresses, on the one hand, the transition from grade 8 to grade 9 and, on the other hand, the strengthening of links between employers, job seekers, the school inspectorate and vocational schools in order to improve the quality of vocational education to enhance the employment prospects of young vocational school graduates.

Around 1000 7th and 8th grade students will benefit from career orientation, 120 socially disadvantaged girls will be supported to continue their education, while around 760 professional school students will benefit from information, counselling and better links to employers until the end of the project. The project also builds the capacities of teachers and employers to better understand and support the socially disadvantaged students or employees.
