From July 31 to August 9, 2024, the Desk Officer of HEKS/EPER Romania conducted a field visit to Ethiopia. Even though HEKS/EPER has no direct ECHO funding in Ethiopia, the Desk Officer was able to gather insights for future humanitarian projects and solidify relationships with key partners (national and international).

A project proposal was submitted to ECHO during this visit via the ECHO-certified entity the HEKS/EPER Romania Foundation.

The Desk Officer travelled to the Somali Region, visiting the HEKS/EPER operational base in Cherati, a remote area with significant humanitarian needs. The visit included assessments of ongoing projects funded by BHA in partnership with the local NGO OWDA. Despite the challenging access to these areas, HEKS/EPER in Ethiopia has established a strong access and effective operations, particularly in the WASH, Protection, and MPCA sectors.

Two IDP (Internal Displaced Person) sites were visited in Dulqabow and Hawir, gathering direct feedback from beneficiaries. Pressing needs were identified such as access to water, health, and food security.

The visit concluded at HEKS/EPER Coordination office in Addis Ababa with a debriefing of the field deployment and a presentation on HEKS/EPER Romania’s set up, and open discussions on future collaborations involving ECHO funding.
