  • Report based on the first round of questionnaires under HOPE project

The report on the personnel retention rate, the possible reasons for a low retention rate of Roma employees, the interactions between co-workers and with management inside the companies presents the results of the first round of questionnaires applied by HEKS/EPER Romania’s experts in companies from Cluj and Bihor counties between November 2019 – January 2020, using the tools developed by Adrian Hatos (SC Praxis SRL). The report has two parts: the first one shows the results of the questionnaire applied to the employees and the second one – the results of the questionnaire applied to the managers (e.g. shift managers) and to the specialists from the Human Resources departments.

The questionnaires were applied to 216 employees, respectively 74 managers and HR representatives. Four of the 10 companies are in the car wiring sector and represent 28.7% of workers, the rest (71%) being active in the sanitation, furniture or food industry. Regarding managers, the ratio is somewhat reversed: 43 (58%) are active in the field of car wiring and 42% in the sanitation, furniture or food industry.

Most of the responding workers are unskilled workers (79.6%), Roma (56%), between 20-49 years old (79%), who perform simple physical work at the workplace (83.8%), without having anyone in charge (93.2%) and with a high frequency of workplace interactions.

The vast majority of workers have favorable opinions about the workplace. The most important aspects for assessing the quality of a job are: the possibility of free days for solving family problems, respect from the management, paid leave, granting meal vouchers in addition to salary and help from the company in case of difficult situations. In this respect, a radical contradiction between employees and managers was observed. While the managers are convinced that the fundamental aspect of their employees’ motivation is the salary level, the interviewed workers appreciate more the possibility of having days off, respect from the management, paid leave etc. The salary level was only on the 6th place in the job satisfaction sources hierarchy for unskilled workers.
